Story Starts

Every so often I will post several story ideas to get you started. (I would promise every month, but we all know how slow I am to update *blushes*.)

If you have any ideas for these or any other things in the workshop, please email me as always! And remember, you're always free to post any completed projects on the Writings page.

    1. What is the spookiest ghost story you've ever heard? Try writing it as a comedy.

    2. SciFiku? Try a haiku in a specific genre like science fiction, fantasy, or horror. Not only fun, there's markets for these kinds of poems!

    3. Backwards fairy tale! What if Cinderella were a princess who wound up scrubbing floors. You tell the story!

    4. Forget the love sonnets - try a limerick to tell that person you're crazy about them - or just plain crazy...

    5. Write a story starting with the sentence: "A pretty girl, a loaded gun, and a whole lotta money - a surefire recipe for disaster."

    6. Use your TV for this one. Grab your remote and turn on the TV. Pick a channel and random and pick a person from the screen. This is your main character. Change channels. Pick another character. Change channels one last time and use the first location you see. This is your setting. Write a story and put all these elements together.

    7. Dear Diary... Write a journal entry for your pet. If you don't have a pet, then make a journal entry for a non-sentient being.

    8. Write a story starting with the sentence: "It's better than letting HIM have it," she whispered urgently.

    9. What's the craziest superpower you can think of? Grab the dictionary, randomly pick a word and use it somehow as a superpower.

    10. TV Poetry! Channel surf again. This time grab random lines of dialogue and write them down. Change channels often. One line of dialogue = one line of poetry. What do you get?

    11. Stuck together! Put two people that can't stand each other in a situation where they are, quite literally, stuck with each other. Give one of them a strange phobia and see how the tension builds...

    12. What I want for Christmas / my birthday. Plan the perfect gift for a character in a story you're working on. What would they want most? What is the worst thing they could be given? How do they react?
